If a certain page on an Internet site doesn't load for some reason or if a link is not working, the website visitor shall see an error page with some generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the site, that can make the visitor leave your Internet site. A solution in this case is a function offered by some website hosting service providers - the option to set up your own custom-made error pages which shall have exactly the same layout as your site and that may contain any images or text that you would like based on the specific error. There are 4 common errors that may take place and they involve these particular so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your world-wide web browser sends a bad request to the web server and it cannot be processed; 401, if you are supposed to log in to see a web page, but you have not done this yet; 403, if you don't have a permission to view a specific page; and 404, if a link which you've clicked leads to a file that does not exist. In all of these cases, visitors shall be able to see your custom content instead of a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Hosting

You will be able to set up personalized error pages for each of your domains or subdomains. The function is supported by all hosting plans that we provide, so after you log in to the Hepsia CP and check out the Hosted Domains section, you can click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up that will be displayed, you could pick the type of error page that should show up - a default one from our system, a conventional Apache server page or a customized one. For the aforementioned option, you will need to assign the URL to the page, so if you use customized pages, you need to upload the files inside your Internet hosting account first. Another way is to use an .htaccess file placed in the domain or subdomain folder with a line for every error type. The actual syntax can be found in our Knowledge Base, to help you use this function even if you don't have any previous experience.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting

When you host your web sites in a semi-dedicated server account from our company, you'll be able to set tailor-made error pages for any of them effortlessly via our in-house developed Hepsia hosting Control Panel. With just several mouse clicks in the Hosted Domains section, you could edit the default setting from a system page to a custom made one for each of the 4 error types. All you have to do is provide a link to every single file that you've uploaded before that and then save the change. If needed, you will be able to revert this change whenever you want and in exactly the same way. If you want, you may use an .htaccess file too. It should be created/uploaded within the domain or subdomain folder associated with the site whose error pages you intend to change and the content for such a file can be found in our Help article about this matter.
